How to Read a BaZi Chart
A step-by-step beginner guide to understanding the Four Pillars of Destiny — from the basic structure to interpreting what your chart means for your life.
Step 1: Understand the Chart Structure
A BaZi chart is organized into four columns called pillars. From right to left, they are: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar has two rows:

Step 2: Identify the Elements
Every character in your chart corresponds to one of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The 10 Heavenly Stems each map directly to an element in Yin or Yang form:
The 12 Earthly Branches (the zodiac animals) each contain one or more “hidden stems” — additional elements concealed within each branch. These hidden elements add depth and nuance to the chart.
Step 3: Understand What Each Pillar Represents
Year Pillar
Your ancestry, social image, and early childhood (ages 0-16). It reflects the family and societal environment you were born into, and how the outside world perceives you.
Month Pillar
Your career, parents, and young adulthood (ages 16-32). This is the most important pillar for career analysis — it reveals your professional strengths, working style, and industry alignment.
Day Pillar
Your inner self, marriage, and middle age (ages 32-48). The Heavenly Stem is your Day Master (core identity). The Earthly Branch represents your spouse palace — key for relationship readings.
Hour Pillar
Your aspirations, children, and later life (ages 48+). It reveals your inner ambitions, subconscious drives, and what kind of legacy you build.
Step 4: Analyze Element Interactions
Once you've identified all the elements in your chart, the next step is analyzing how they interact. Every element in your chart has a relationship to your Day Master, falling into one of five categories:

Step 5: Assess Day Master Strength
Your Day Master's strength is determined primarily by the month of birth (which season your element was born in) and the support from surrounding elements. This is one of the most important steps in BaZi reading.
Seasonal Strength
- Wood is strongest in spring (February-April)
- Fire is strongest in summer (May-July)
- Earth is strongest in the transition months between seasons
- Metal is strongest in autumn (August-October)
- Water is strongest in winter (November-January)
Day Master strength determines what elements are favorable for you. A strong Day Master benefits from Output, Wealth, and Power elements (which channel its energy productively). A weak Day Master benefits from Resource and Companion elements (which strengthen and support it).
Step 6: Read Your Luck Pillars
Beyond the birth chart itself, BaZi includes 10-Year Luck Pillars (大运, Dà Yùn) — a sequence of elemental phases that cycle through your life in 10-year blocks. Each luck pillar brings a new pair of elements that overlay your birth chart, activating different dynamics.
When a luck pillar brings elements that are favorable for your Day Master, that decade tends to feel smoother and more productive. When it brings unfavorable elements, you may face more challenges — but also greater opportunities for growth through adversity.
Annual pillars add another layer of timing, showing the specific energy of each year within a luck cycle. This is why BaZi is used not just for personality analysis but for strategic timing of important decisions.
Common Mistakes When Reading BaZi
Judging a chart by a single element — always look at the whole chart in context.
Confusing the Chinese solar calendar with the lunar calendar — BaZi uses the solar calendar.
Ignoring hidden stems in the Earthly Branches — they contain crucial information.
Treating "strong" as always good and "weak" as always bad — both have advantages.
Reading BaZi too literally — it shows tendencies and potentials, not fixed fate.
